Monroe eyes first state football title

FAIRBANKS-The Monroe Rams will be in their first ever state title game on Saturday. It will be rematch with the Nikiski Bulldogs. The Rams beat the Bulldogs 37-27 in the regular season finale forcing a three-way tie for the Greatland Conference title.

The Rams went 5-1 this year only playing conference games because they have just 11 to 15 players available for games. Their only loss was to Eielson. Nikiski beat Eielson to advance to the state final.

The Rams are coming off a 40-0 shutout of the Barrow Whalers in the state semifinals. In that game, like much of their season, everyone contributes a lot and plays a key role because of the low roster numbers. But the five seniors are the core of the team.

Quarterback Tyler Wells orchestrates the offense, while Scooter Bynum, Dylan Gavora, Alex Callahan, and Michael Neville make plays on both sides of the ball.

The small schools state championship game kicks off at noon tomorrow in the Anchorage Football Stadium.
