FAIRBANKS-As community members work to rebuild mental healthcare in Fairbanks, some worry the only clubhouse for the mentally ill could close in May. Located in the Fairbanks Community Mental Health Services building, the clubhouse is managed by volunteers along with a small grant. Gene Redden, a retired healthcare professional, has lead the effort and he says they can’t stay in the building past May and they won’t have any more funding. The clubhouse serves between 15 and 30 people each day and provides food and a place to socialize. Several officials in mental health say, members of the public should pressure legislators to make mental health services a priority.
