March in memory of post office burn victim

FAIRBANKS, AK -- Yesterday afternoon, citizens participated in a walk of remembrance for Johnny Wallis, who died from burns suffered in a fire on New Year's Day.

He was originally from Fort Yukon.

Authorities say the 59–year old man apparently had been sleeping in an entryway in the Downtown Post Office when he was found on fire by citizens coming to pick up their mail.

A large crowd was on hand at Saint Matthews Church yesterday honoring Wallis, and asking that questions surrounding the incident and his subsequent death, be answered.

The police and the fire marshal's office are continuing to investigate the death.

According to Native leaders Shirley Lee and Steve Ginnis, this is NOT just a Native issue, but one for the community in as a whole.
