ANCHORAGE-The top ranked team in the state used a steady dose of running the football and a stout defensive performance to move in the ASAA First National Bowl high school football large schools state playoffs.
The Eagles led the Malemutes 12-0 at halftime. Leroy Elliot made his mark running for touchdown scores of 20 or more yards in each half. The first a 20 yarder, gave West a 12-0 lead that they would take into the break.
West scored again in the second half despite the Lathrop defense holding them to a touchdown. The Malemutes couldn't get across the goal line or through the goal posts.
Lathrop finishes the season with a 2-2 Railbelt conference record, going 5-3 in the regular season and ending with a 5-4 record after last night's postseason loss. The Malemutes made their first playoff appearance in a decade.
