Mackey wins new race

Four–time Iditarod and Yukon Quest champion Lance Mackey has won the inaugural running of the Top of the World 350 sled dog race.

Mackey crossed the finish line in Tok on Sunday about 40 minutes ahead of the second–place finisher, Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race veteran musher Gerry Wilomitzer.

Jake Berkowitz, this year's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race rookie, was third, coming in about eight minutes later in the 350–mile race.

Twenty–two teams competed in the race, which was held as a tribute to Eagle Village tribal chief Isaac Juneby.

He died earlier this year at the age of 71 in an auto accident.

Teams carried memorabilia of Juneby to present to Eagle Village residents, where a traditional dance and potlatch were held in his honor on Friday.
