FAIRBANKS- From 1904, until the mid– 1960s, nearly 4,500 Alaskan residents were convicted of insanity and sent to Morningside Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Many patients were never heard from again, which created a group known as the "Lost Alaskans." About five years ago, volunteer researchers organized a "Lost Alaskans Project," to tell the story of Morningside Hospital. Recently, the group published an online database, cataloguing Alaskan patients who spent time in the hospital. Organizers of the Project hope the story of Morningside Hospital will become recognized as an important part of Alaskan history.
