A longtime Fairbanks area fire official has died.

 

A longtime Fairbanks area fire official has died.
 
Bill Shechter passed away in seattle Tuesday after suffering a stroke.
 
He was 69.
 
Shechter was the chief of the University of Alaska Fairbanks fire deparment for over 20 years.
 
He had also served as Fairbanks city fire department chief,m and headed up the Fairbanks north star boroughs deparment of Emergency Operations.
 
Even after retiring, Shechter served as a commissioner for the University Fire Service Area.
 
Shechter began his career as a student firefighter at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1970, eventually working his way up to chief.
 
Shechter is survived by his wife, Patti, and three children.
