Long-time ASAA head to step down in 2014

Long-time Alaska School Activities (ASAA) Executive Director, Gary Matthews, has submitted his letter of resignation to the ASAA Board of Directors.

The resignation becomes effective July 2, 2014

The announcement was made Tuesday during the ASAA Spring meeting held in Cordova.

When he resigns, Matthews will have completed a 48 year career in education and 21 years of service to ASAA.

During his tenure as Executive Director, Matthews spearheaded the creation of the Alaska High School Hall of Fame which recognizes Alaska high school athletes, coaches, administrators,

corporations and supporters for their exemplary careers and support of interscholastic activities.

That's according to an ASAA press release issued late Thursday to Alaska media outlets.

He also implemented the "Play for Keeps, Win for Life" program which supports healthy living choices and abstinence from tobacco, alcohol and drugs during the high school career.

Matthews has also been instrumental in the expansion of new state tournaments including the state basketball championship which now brings 80 teams into Anchorage during the week of

March Madness Alaska.

The ASAA Board of Directors has formed a screening committee to begin the search to fill the ASAA Executive Director position.
