Lathrop girls soccer team now 6-0

FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop Malemutes faced their stiffest tested of their first six games on Friday night and still passed it.

The Hutchison Hawks hosted the Malemutes in a MAC conference game and the Hawks wanted to show that last season's run at the region title wasn't a fluke by giving the undefeated Malemutes their first loss of the season.

Hutchison did do something that no other opponent has done all year and that's score on Lathrop. It was a 1-1 game at the half.

The second half featured some great chances Lathrop but they were wide or Hutchison goal keep Angel Ochoa saved shots on goal. The pivotal play game late in the second half where Lathrop's Karli Fitzgerald was headed towards the net but was taken down by one of the Hawks in the penalty box which set up a penalty kick. Fitzgerald elected to go the right corner and the ball found the back of the net to give Lathrop the 2-1 lead.

The Malemutes were close out the game in the final minutes and hold on for the 2-1 win over Hutchison (0-2-1, 0-1 MAC)

Savannah Garrett scored the first goal for Lathrop and Elly Veazey had the first half equalizer for Hutch in the first half. Fitzgerald now has 10 on the year for Lathrop. Garrett has four goals in the last two games and Alexis Shipman has three goals this year.
