Lathrop boys get second at state, Interior athletes win golds

ANCHORAGE-The Malemutes were led by a group of seniors in getting silver in the boys 4A division improving on last year's third place tie. The Lathrop boys team won silver with 78 points. Kodiak was third and Dimond won it all with 105 points.

In girls 4A Colony won by nine points with Chugiak and Thunder Mountain tying for second with 52 points.

In 1-3A The Grace Christian Girls four-peat as track champions and the ACS boys repeat. The Eielson boys team just missed out on bronze by three points.

A number of Interior athletes reached the top of the podium for their teams.

In 4A Charles Suddtuh won the 100 meter dash in 11.21 seconds for his first 100m gold.

Lathrop's To'a Levi swept the girls discus and shotput, becoming the first Malemute to do that since Alana Clooten in 2005.

Tyreke Jennis won the long jump event for Lathrop by an inch on 20 foot nine inch jump.

In relays the West Valley boys got two golds. Sudduth, Prince Cooks, Josh Cummings and Danny Eagan won the 4x1. Cooks, Sudduth, Cummings and Daniel Remington wonthe 4x2 relays.

The 4x4 relay team of Jociece Canon, Cameron Bryant, Jennis, and Travis Phillips won gold in 3:31.7 for Lathrop.

For standouts Kenai's Allie Ostrander, a junior, won the 800,1600 and 3200 meter races setting new records in the 1600 (4:49) and 3200 (10:13.8). The 1600 record stood since 1977 and the 3200 record was back in 86'. Ostrander is 15th in the country in the 1600 and fourth best in the 3200.

Colony's Peggy Mathis won four golds. Mathis finished first in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dash and the girls long jump.

Last but not least in 1-3A Eielson's Tony Griffith was named most outstanding athlete. Griffith, a junior, won the 100 and 200 meter dash and was second in the long jump event.

Other notables from the state track and field meet.

Lathrop's Damian Coger got silver in boys shotput with a 50 foot 5 inch throw. Daniel Remington of West Valley got silver in the 400 running 44.45 seconds. Cameon Bryant got bronze in the 110M hurdles for Lathrop.

In 1-3A Monroe's John Minder was second in the 110 hurdles. Eielson's Evonne Johnson earned bronze in the 100 and got silver 200 meter dash. Hutchison's Veronica Yanish was third in the girls long jump.
