Lathrop and Hutch split 2013 MAC rifle championships

FAIRBANKS-Today at the EF Horton Rifle Range on UAF's campus was the final day of the high school rifle Region VI championships.

The shooters will complete 60 smallbore shots, 20 targets from the kneeling, standing and prone positions and 60 shots-standing for air rifle.

The Hutchison Hawks won both air rile and smallbore last year but at the end of Friday's action Lathrop won air rifle with 2252 points-29 more than Hutch. Delta (2139) was third followed by North Pole (2116), West Valley (2070) and Tok (2035).

That lead held for Lathrop as they win the 2013 MAC Air Rifle Region VI title. Kasey Barnes was the Interior's best in air rifle for the third year in a row. The senior shot a 577. The Malemutes swept air rifle with Chloe Allan coming in second with 268 which was a personal best. Connor Gilliam was third with a 566.

In smallbore Hutchsion came away with the 2013 MAC Smallbore Region VI title for the second year in a row. The Hawks finished with 2175. Lathrop was second with 2159 followed by Delta (2036), Tok (2007), North Pole (1969) and West Valley (1924).

Amy Gentry and Emma Daniels earned the third and second place spots with scores of 549 and 550. But Lathrop's Liam Eberhart, the sophomore won the individual smallbore title with a 552.

What makes this so challenging for the shooters is that a lot of them are also shooting for the Junior Olympics which is happening this weekend at the EF Horton Rifle Range as well. That concludes on Sunday.
