Keynote Speech Stirs Emotions at TCC Meeting

FAIRBANKS- The keynote speaker at the annual Tanana Chiefs Conference meeting stirred emotions and received a standing ovation with his speech on tribal sovereignty. Troy Eid from the Indian Law and Order Commission says the issue of tribal sovereignty is a modern civil rights movement and it’s not fully respected in the state of Alaska. As examples of Alaska Natives being treated as second class citizens, he cited high numbers of lawsuits that the state files against Alaskan Tribes, and he noted the state judicial system ignores tribal courts. His recommendation received cheers from the audience that Governor Sean Parnell issue an executive order to recognize tribes as sovereign nations rather than colonies.
