In the year 2000, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital opened their new J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center, and already they have received an award for outstanding achievement.
The American College of Surgeons acknowledged the center for it's excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.
Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is one of only 79 U.S. health care facilities with accredited cancer programs to receive this prestigious honor.
The program was evaluated on 29 standards categorized within one of four cancer program activity areas.
Dr. Danny Robinette a General Surgeon for the center says receiving this award is a big deal.
It's the first time anyone has ever gotten one in Alaska, and it's something to be very very proud of.
It requires a lot of work on the part of the physician, the registrar and the entire team to put together a whole spectrum of support for our cancer patients, to see that they get the best treatment possible, either here or on referral to other centers when necessary."
