FAIRBANKS, Ak-There was a sporting event that went down in the Carlson Center over the weekend and I definitely would've went down because I can't roller skate but these tough ladies sure can.
The Fairbanks Roller Girl All-Stars who are a part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and are currently ranked 34th in the West Region took on the Rage City Dirty Pollis out of Anchorage so a little good ol' Fairbanks Anchorage rivalry going on.
Fairbanks did win 157 to 147 but it wasn't too hostile given that the proceeds of the contest went to the Fairbanks Animal Shelter.
So girls knocking each other around for a good cause is a good thing.
We caught up with the Dirty Pollis who say Roller Derby is a competitive sisterhood.
Head coach of the Dirty Pollis, Jennifer Miller said, " We wanna win this game. Yeah we love them you know thier your sisters but you gotta hit your sisters every once in a while right?!"
The team captain of the Dirty Pollis, Vanessa "Ness You Up" Inman says the rolley derby beacme an iimportant part of her life.
"Ever since I started roller derby my life has changed. I mean, I was kind of a loner. I didn't have a lot of things to do. I was just bored and I didn't really fit in other sports so I just joined roller derby and like, they welcomed me in. We don't just play sports, we hang out, we help each other out on a day to day basis, like help each other move, have lunch, just anything."
