Interior Hospitals had to wait longer than usual for first 2014 baby

Each year workers at the maternity wards at both Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Bassett Army Community Hospital wait anxiously to see who will be the first born in 2014.

This year workers had to wait a little longer than usual.

No Babies were born on January 1st 2014 in either of the main hospitals in the Interior.

The first baby, according to Officials with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital was born at 5 o’clock this morning, January 2nd.

The baby boy, Edward Martin Kumpula, was born to parents Shannon and Jason Kumpula weighing in at just over 9 pounds.

As for Bassett Army Community Hospital, they have yet to have a baby born there in 2014, although they do say one mother has been admitted.
