Indictment handed down in Geraghty Street fire

An 18 year old Fairbanks man has been charged in connection with the January fire that destroyed the Geraghty street apartments.

A Fairbanks grand jury has indicted 18 year old Connor Groppel for his alleged role in the blaze.

According to a release from the Attorney General's office, "The fire destroyed the Geraghty Street Building and killed one of its occupants."

The grand jury indicted Groppel on charges of first and second degree murder, manslaughter, arson and criminal mischief.

He is also accused of burglary and tampering with evidence.

The indictments are the result of investigation by the Fairbanks City Police and Fire Departments.

At the time of the indictment, Groppel was already in the Department of Corrections’ custody on other charges, and with the new charges, has been ordered held without bail.
