Illinois Street Almost Done

The long forgotten smell of fresh asphalt is cause for relief to downtown area businesses and motor traffic.

All this week, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will be completing the pavement phase of the much talked about Illinois Street Reconstruction project.

AK DOT has authorized an additional 703 thousand dollars to the 22 million dollar reconstruction to accelerate work to include installation of traffic signals and completion of five intersections.

The acceleration would extend work through mid–November and work from Barnette Bridge to Noyes Slough Bridge would be completed.

The bonus, DOT Public Information Officer Meadow Bailey says, the acceleration will allow the opening and use of Barnette Street Bridge for downtown motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
