FAIRBANKS-Today at Hutchison High School senior forward Vanessa Hasting signed her national letter of intent. She'll still be a bird. Hasting signed with the Highline Community College Thunderbirds of the NWAACC. Highline is in Des Moines, Washington near Seattle.
The Thunderbirds went 19-11 overall and 10-6 in their division for a birth into the women's tournament. Hasting could face former teammate Mimi Wood who is at Skagit CC. Skagit and Highline played each other last season.
Hasting was a post presence on both sides of the ball for the Hutchison Hawks playing a role as post defender and rebounder. The Hawks finished third in the Aurora conference this year.
She's battled injuries throughout her career as a basketball and volleyball player but will move on to become a Thunderbird. Head coach Amber Mosley was able to convice Hasting to come to Highline Community College.
"They have good academics and once she talked me it just kind of clicked," Hasting said. "I felt like she was really straight forward and honest and she really wanted me to go there. It's a pretty good feeling to that know that I came off of a couple of injuries. But none of that really stopped me so just keep going."
"She took the initiative to go out there and contact coaches and get her profile out there. She did a lot of work," said Vanessa's mom Reina.
"Very proud of her," Nick Hasting said. Vanessa's father added, "she did it all on her own so we're very proud of her."
