FAIRBANKS-A new volleyball season is set to start in Palmer this weekend. Who will be there? The Hutchison Hawks who will open their 2013 volleyball season on the road. The Palmer Jamboree will feature Colony, Delta and Palmer. The Palmer Moose finished third in the state the last two seasons.
The Hawks were eliminated from last year's Aurora Conference Tournament by local power Monroe. Under head coach Linda Bode the Hawks are optimistic about this new season and the competition they'll face in Palmer to ready themselves for conference play. They return all-conference junior setter Caroline Everts. They also have Lina Heinricehs the 6'2 middle blocker moves up from JV. Both of them feel this will be a different Hawks team.
"We're bringing back some front row, same setting and back row, but I think like a lot of new people are here and it's going to be like a new game pretty much. Everyone's been practicing and really working on improving their own personal skills. I think they have a faster pace and more of an organized offense," Everts said.
"Varsity plays a lot higher than at JV which is nice because it's more competitive," Heinriches said. "We work pretty well together, we've know each other fairly well, I mean, they were playing together last year and having like the same classes. So I think that knowing each other will really help us like bring us together as a team and we could be a really good team and hopefully do well at state."
