Hutchison splits on senior night

FAIRBANKS-Tonight the Hutchison Hawks faced the Delta Junction Huskies for senior night. The girls ended sending their three seniors out in style with a50-25 win but it took awhile to get things going.

It was only a 16-11 game at halftime. Hutchison scored 13 points in the first but Delta's Jess Reiter had all of the Huskies 11 points at the end of that quarter. The Hawks shut out Delta in the second quarter but only scored three points themselves.

Hutchison started the second half with a 10-0 run. Reiter tried to stop the momentum with basket. She ended up with a game high 19 points. It was a drought for Delta after that. Hutchison went on another 7-0 after Reiter's shots and outscored the Huskies 26-6 in the third quarter.

Katie Peterson hit two of her seven points during the first run to to start the third. Senior Vanessa Hasting followed up with baskets of her own. The senior forward had 10 on senior night. Kiana Edwards, the senior guard, hit a trey ball in the third quarter to put the Hawks up 29-16. Edwards finished with a game high 12. Taylor Hastings hit three of her six points in third quarter as well. She returned for the first time since being sidelined with a lower back injury.

The third senior Kourtney Klein was out for the year after suffering an ACL injury before the season started but she was able to dress and head coach Jenny Benson put her in the game. Klein scored a layup in the fourth quarter to complete the trio of scoring seniors as the Hawks win 50-25.

The boys game has some history. In the last two meeting the Huskies won on a walk-off buzzer beaters at Hutchison. This game was close throughout and would also go into the fourth quarter.

Both teams got up and down went back and fourth. Neither team had more than a six point lead in the entire game. John Crabtree broke a 14-14 tie right before the end of the first quarter for Delta.

Hutchison made converted in the paint in the second quarter as Daniel Page droved from the left side in for a layup to tie it at 18 all. Then teammate Emmanual Pachecho also got some paint points to give the Hawks their first lead of the game 20-19. The Huskies answered with a 7-0 run as Aaron Williams got two offensive rebounds before getting the putback to go. Williams had 10 for Delta in the first half.

The Huskies would have a 31-27 edge at the halftime. Fast forwarding into the fourth Page made three for Hutch to bring the Hawks within 60-63 with a few seconds left but the Huskies convert two at the line and hold on for 65-60 win.
