Hutch and Monroe win Interior volleyball openers

FAIRBANKS-Last night at Joe T Court the Lathrop Malemutes hosted the Hutchison Hawks in their season opener in a 3A, 4A matchup. The Malemutes have retooled their team after returning just three players from last year.

Lathrop held on to take the first set 25-21 with the help of senior Deshaunta West and Mikayla Tripplehorn. West had six solo blocks and Tripplehorn led Lathrop with five kills.
But the Hawks responded with a sweep taking the next sets 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 and won the match 4-1.

Caroline Everts had 28 assists to aid a balanced scoring attack. The Hawks had five players with at least four kills. Senior Vanessa Hasting had a game high eight. The 6'2" Lina Heinrichs added five blocks and six kills. Katie Hopper and Annalee Tidwell combined for 14 digs.

The Hawks played some tough comp at the Palmer Jamboree last week and they say that experience played a part in getting this win.

"It really just helped us learn how to play as a team and that really helped us today, constant talking and it was a good experience for the team, we got to bond together and it really made us all a lot closer," Hasting said.

"They are playing really good defense, right now, they talk, I think that's the biggest thing that we've been stressing is the communication and so just the talking on the floor and the ability to adjust. They're fearless, they're not afraid to swing, that's nice," head coach Linda Bode said.

RAMS SWEEP PATRIOTS

Also last night in high school volleyball Monroe's Dave Obermeyer takes over for Mike Lessley and gets a win in his debut. The Rams swept the Patriots 25-12, 25-16, 25-21.

Marissa King had 15 kills to lead Monroe. Andi Clark dished out 25 assists and served six aces as well.

Monroe is off until next Tuesday to take on West Valley at home. North Pole will be in the Chugiak Tournament this weekend along with the Wolfpack.
