HS Volleyball Tournament round up

FAIRBANKS-Yesterday morning was the start of the Aurora Conference volleyball tournament at Eielson High School. The top two teams will go to the 3A state championship tournament.

First game of the day was the host #4 Eielson taking on #5 Delta. The Ravens up 2-0 and were looking for the sweep but the Huskies made it tough.

Valerie Krepel's ace tied it at 19 all. The Huskies were keeping pace with Eielson late. Kate Browder got a couple of aces to give Eielson match up but Kelly Christman's forced extra points tying the game at 25.

But after a Delta error Asia Do put down the game winner for Eielson as they get the sweep 25-16, 25-22, 27-25.


#3 Valdez and #6 Galena took the court after the first game. The winner gets #2 Hutchison yesterday afternoon. The Buccaneers were focused and ready for this one.

Senior Gabby LaBonte started it off with some aces off the service line. Miranda Haltness, Veronica Hursh and Maddy Fleming made their presence felt with their offensive games.

The Bucs led 9-1 in the first and start their Aurora Conference tournament strong with a 25-6, 25-6, 25-10 sweep over Galena. Galena and Delta go into the loser's bracket in the double elimination tournament.


The Ravens got back on the court at two o'clock to play Monroe the number one seed in the tournament rocking their pink jerseys.

It was close in the first set as no one had more than a two point lead. It was tied 9-9 then Monroe went on a 10-0 ignited by six aces from Giselle Hollaus. The Rams got the first set 25-11.

The Ravens made their case from the service line in the second as Lexis Smith broke a 6-6 tie. Then Larissa Franklin gave Eielson a lead with an ace as well.

But the Rams battled through and win the second set 25-20 and get the sweep with a 25-17 win in the third. The Rams advance to the semis and await the winner of Hutchison and Valdez .


The Valdez Buccaneers swept the Hutchison Hawks in the afternoon game 25-22, 25-21, 25-21. But Hutchision had a second chance last night.

It took five sets but the Hawks get past the Delta Huskies with a 25-7, 25-12, 18-25, 23-25, 15-6 victory.

Hutchsion has two win twice today to win the loser's bracket and get into the final. They will play Eielson at 11:45 and play the loser of the Monroe/Valdez game.

Monroe and Valdez will play at 10 am today.


Now in the Mid Alaska Conference tournament there was a semifinal last night.

The Lathrop Malemutes win a date with the number seed West Valley Wolfpack today by sweeping North Pole 28-26, 25-16, 25-16.

The Patriots end the season winless in MAC contests.

West Valley and Lathrop will play for the MAC title today at 1 p.m. at North Pole high school.
