Homeless camp destroyed by early morning fire

A homeless camp was destroyed by a fire this morning off of the Steese Highway.

According to Fairbanks Police Department the camp was built by the hand of a local man off of a bike trail near the highway.

Motorists reported the large blaze in the woods to the Fairbanks Fire and Police Department.

They say this was a known spot and the homeless man would often phone officials for different issues who would then make the trek to the camp which was a large hut built of sticks, logs, and insulated by sawdust.

Law enforcement officials say no one was harmed in the fire but do ask if anyone knows the whereabouts of the 60-year-old occupant to phone Police and notify them that he is okay.
