FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop boys handled business in North Pole taking on the host Patriots.
The Malemutes would come away with a 64-51 win after leading 31-23 at the half and 46-33 going into the fourth.
Lathrop will face West Valley tonight at 7:30 in North Pole high school for the MAC title. It will be the fourth meeting between the two teams. West Valley is 2-1 in the season series. The Wolfpack are the only team to beat Lathrop in 4A play all year.\
In the girls semifinal the Lathrop Malemutes dominated for a 50-23 win over North Pole. The Patriots defeated Lathrop 39-35 on senior night in North Pole in their last meeting. This was a lot different.
Lathrop's defense was smothering allowing just eight points mid-way through the third quarter as they led 36-8. The Malemutes will battle West Valley for the MAC title game.
In the Aurora conference the Monroe Rams won their fourth straight conference championship with 68-25 victory over Delta. Monroe had six players with at least eight points led by Scooter Bynum's game high 12. Aaron Williams had six to lead the Huskies.
Monroe's senior class finishes their conference careers without losing a single conference game.
On the girls side Galena held off Valdez to win the Aurora girls title. The Galena Hawks had the three ball dropping in the first hald but Buccaneers kept making runs to close quarters to stay close.
Valdez was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game but still went on one of their patented runs to take a four point 48-44 into the final quarter.
Galena rallied behind the strong play of Romay Shayen who had a game high 19 points for Galena. Veronica Hursh had 15 for the Bucs.
Now both Hutchison Hawks boys and girls basketball teams need to win two games today in order to clinch a state berth as the second Aurora conference team. The boys team will play Valdez at 11:45 and the girls face Delta at 10 am.
