Hawks make second trip to state softball tourney in three years

FAIRBANKS-One of two MAC teams are going to the state tournament and one is Hutchison. The Hutchison Hawks are young but experienced when it comes to the state tournament. This is their second state berth in the team's three year existence.

How did they get here? Hutchison finished second in the MAC with 7-5 record but gave North Pole their only conference loss this season. That win gave Hutch the confidence that they can compete and win against tough teams.

That confidence could be a big factor for freshmen pitcher Kelsey Huntington who will be making her state tournament debut but her catcher, sophomore CC Sanchez, has her back.

"I think we're definitely ready. We've been working for this all season. That win against North Pole defintely boosted our confidence. I think it'll take us a long way. If we play like we've been playing I think we have that first game," Sanchez said.

"I think we're being really strong, being really tough as a team and we're doing really good at practice," Huntington added.

Jason Jacobs has been the head coach for Hutchison for over a year now and took over the second half of the season when Hutch made their first trip to state last year. Now that the team has a year of experience he feels they'll need to avoid getting overwhelmed.

"As long as we get through that first inning I think. Get through our first few batters, realize we can make some plays, get to the plate and our own hitting. I think we'll be okay," Jacobs said.
