Hawks make history with win over Lathrop

FAIRBANKS-It took overtime but Hutchison did whatever they could to secure a huge non-conference 3-2 overtime win over Lathrop on Thursday.

The Hutchsion Hawks hosted Lathrop at the Patty Center Ice Arena. The Hawks finished third in the state in 3A last year and the Lathrop Malemutes were fourth in 4A. Lathrop have experience as well with five seniors and five juniors but the Hawks had some kids with guts.

In the first period Thomas Lees strikes first for the Hawks who cash in on a 5-on-3 power play less than five minutes into the game. Alex Marcos had the assist as Hutchison gained a 1-0 lead.

Lathrop would answer at the 8:52 mark of the opening period with Nick Jansen's tying goal. Cameron Walker set up Jansen from behind the goal for the score.

Daniel Slane made some nice saves for the Hawks as did Ryan Ebanal for Lathrop. The second period went scoreless.

Lees would score his second goal of the game with 4:30 left in regulation to force overtime after Lathrop's Rainaker's goal put the Malemutes up 2-1.

Hutchison's Holden McTulloch would be the hero for the Hawks. He put home a huge game winner with 2:20 left in overtime off of a Brandon Rustad pass. Hutchison wins 3-2 in overtime for their first ever win over Lathrop.

Slaine finished with 23 saves for Hutchison and Ebanal registered 17 for Lathrop.
