Governor addresses AFN Convention.

FAIRBANKS- The theme of this year’s Alaska Federation of Natives Convention is Traditional Native Family Values. The Ceremony Opened with Dancing and Speeches. Jerry Isaac, president of Tanana Chiefs Conference said it will be his last year as President. “I’ve done all I can to cooperate and coordinate with all interest groups since I got to TCC as president. There are some successes, there are some challenges that remain to be overcome, “Isaac said.

Governor Parnell’s Big announcement is his education initiative, “to bring more of Alaska’s best teachers to our children. They’re going to supplement what teachers can do inside a classroom through interactive digital learning.” Governor Parnell demonstrated “interactive digital learning” by talking live with students several hundred miles away in the village of Manokotak.

In the next five years, the governor wants to build a network, for teachers with specialized skills, to talk, via internet, with students in every corner of the state. With more reliance on technology, the governor stressed that traditional family values are still the strength of future generations.
