FAIRBANKS-Yesterday in the Memorial Day sunshine there was sand volleyball action beside Growden Memorial Park in the King and Queen of the Sand Beach volleyball tournament. It was a reverse co-ed two on two tourney so every player played with a different partner in each game.

Current and former Nanook players and local high school players made up some of the field. The women's final was between Julie Gilhuly and Jessica Hill both former UAF players.

Gilhuly went the distance winning the loser's bracket and beat Hill twice to win the Queen title. Jennifer Shannon was third and Sierra Steel from West Valley was fourth.

For the men Gavin Meggert was crowned King losing just once all day. He defeated Mike Quinn of West Valley who won the loser's bracket the first of the final two games before Meggert won the deciding game. William Boe Edwards finished third in the men's bracket.

The next event is the Midnight Sun Tournament on June 7.
