FAIRBANKS- After a dramatic fire season in 2013, which included an evacuation on Chena Hot Springs Road, several agencies are seeking ways to improve fire service in forested areas. The State Division of Forestry and the Fairbanks North Star Borough hosted a public meeting to discuss the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Their project targets “Zones of Concern,” or areas of heavy black spruce, steep hills, and limited roads. Under the plan, the Division of Forestry will proactively create fire breaks on public land, to reduce fire risks to private property. They will first concentrate around Nordale Road, Goldstream Alaska subdivision, and Goldmine Trail.
