Foreign Language Education in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS- Most elementary schools offer band and orchestra, but what if they added optional foreign language classes, too? This is a dream that local educator, Judy Tolbert would love to see come true. For her, the biggest hurdle to foreign language education here at home is the sporadic nature. "What happens is somebody might learn a little bit in elementary school, and they start the greetings and the numbers or colors and nothing happens after that. And then say middle school for the learn for exploratory, then they start all over again in highschool, " Tolbert said.

Currently she sees Barnette Magnet School doing a good job creating a space for dedicated instruction and practice. The students are only in first grade, but it's perfect age to learn another language. Tolbert has taught French from elementary schoolers to the Osher life–long learning Institute. She says now is a good time to sign your kid up, or yourself, for a language program in town.
