FAIRBANKS- In the coming weeks, The Fairbanks North Star Borough School district must cut their proposed operating budget by nearly $8 million. According to Superintendent Pete Lewis, the cuts will have a significant impact next school year, especially in the classroom. This year he expects to send notices to about 60 teachers about potentially being laid- off; last year 16 teachers were laid off. As staff positions disappear, the District could see a significant jump in classroom sizes, Superintendent Lewis says it could grow three extra students per class. There will be a community meeting in early February after the district releases their budget proposal.
