FAIRBANKS- Fairbanks firefighters will handle emergency dispatches that used to be police responsibility. The City of Fairbanks wants firefighters to care for and transport conscious inebriants to healthcare facilities. Before, firefighters only aided unconscious people and they say in the last week their workload has nearly doubled.
The City decided to shift the work load because police were managing many more calls than firefighters. Fairbanks Police Chief, Laren Zager, said there was a danger they couldn't immediately respond to emergencies because of their high volume of calls. Zager said they appreciate any help firefighter will provide and it will add “ benefits because we are able to perform more urgent police duties at those times."
