Fire in South Fairbanks this evening

Shortly before 7 this (Monday) evening, Fairbanks Firefighters responded to a blaze at C and R Pipe in South Fairbanks.
A 25 foot high pile of scrap cars had caught fire, putting out a large plume of black smoke.
Since the area has no fire hydrants, fire trucks from several departments brought water to fight the blaze.
Heavy equipment from C and R was used to take the pile apart and the fire was extinguished.
It took about 2 hours and 60 thousand gallons of water to put out the fire.

Fire officials say its possible the fire was the result of heavy equipment crushing the cars earlier, but that the exact  cause is unknown.
