FAIRBANKS- When Alaskan fire crews leave the state, it’s one sign the fire season is ending. Today, five firefighter crews left Fort Wainwright and will tackle their new assignment in northern California, another five crews are scheduled to leave Thursday. Yesterday, The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center posted their final updates for the Mississippi and Birch Creek Fires. Wet and cool weather have slowed their growth and resources are being pulled out. Fire activity in other states is extremely high and Public Affairs Officer for Alaska Fire Service, Mel Slater, says it’s likely more firefighters will be sent out and “we have the opportunity to send our firefighters down to help out as they sent theirs up here previously."
