Final day of WEIO local running events highlight the weekend

FAIRBANKS-Here's a look into the weekend sports schedule.

Saturday morning-the Alyeska Golden Mile run. It leads the Golden Days Parade and it starts just before 10 a.m. at the Aurora Energy Plant on 1st Ave. It's $5 and proceeds go to the Literacy Council of Alaska.

Saturday is the final day of WEIO at the Carlson Center. Events include the one foot high kick, men's blanket toss and knuckle hop as well as closing ceremonies.

Also on Saturday night at 7pm the GFRA will be back in action for a regular racing schedule at the Mitchell Raceway.

Sunday is the 49th Gold Discovery Run. There are two start times. For those needing more than 3 hours there's an 8am start and those needing less than 3 hours you'll start at 9 am. Buses leave Silver Gulch at 7:15 and 8:15 am for the Cleary Summit start area.

The 16.5 mile run is $30 and it is the 5th race in the Flint Hills Cup Series.
