FAIRBANKS, AK -- A Fairbanks woman accused of leaving her children in a car when it was 28 degrees below zero has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless endangerment.
26-year-old Kristin Smith was sentenced to three months in jail.
Alaska State Troopers say in a criminal complaint that a passerby found Smith's two children, ages 3 and 4, sitting by themselves in a car wearing little clothing on a cold morning in January.
Smith left her two children in the car after it went into a ditch on Chena Point Road.
Troopers interviewed Smith later in the day. She told them she left the children in the car and walked a quarter mile to her husband's house, where she took a prescription medication and fell asleep.
