Speaking exclusively with News Center 11 late Monday evening, family members of 18 year old Teil Diaz say she has been removed from life support, is breathing on her own, and continues to show signs of improvement.
They say, however, while she is also opening her eyes and experiencing some movement, her condition remains critical.
Diaz was shot in the head March 25th at a West Fairbanks condominum, and remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.
Alaska State Troopers are continuing their investigation into the shooting, but say it appears the shooting was accidental.
That falls in stark contrast to how some Diaz' family members feel.
"This was no accident," says Diaz' aunt Darlene Herbert. "But right now we can't worry about that. We'll let the police handle that. Our main concern is Teil and her recovery."
