Fairbanks Fire Department rescues man who jumped off bridge

FAIRBANKS- Emergency personnel with Fairbanks Fire Department rescued a man who jumped off of a bridge into the Chena River.

Assistant Fire Chief Ernie Misewicz said the man, in his mid-30s, jumped off the bridge to "take a swim."

Due to the height of the water after heavy rainfall this summer, the current swept him under the bridge and down stream.

It took a rescue team of about 16 people almost 45-minutes to rescue the man.

He was treated by medical personnel on scene and then taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for further observation.

Misewicz said the main concern was the man's exposure to the cold water temperatures for an extended period of time.
