Fairbanks bicyclist injured in crash with car

A Fairbanks man on a bicycle was seriously injured in a crash with a car.

The man, who is in his 60s, was left paralyzed by the Saturday afternoon crash.

Witnesses gave police conflicting accounts of whether the bike hit a small sport utility vehicle or the if the SUV hit the biker.

Officer Dave Elzey says the man was northbound on the sidewalk along Old Steese Highway as the SUV turned onto the street from Northgate Square.

He says the SUV moved slowly but the man on the bike was thrown onto the pavement. He wore a helmet but was unable to move his arms and legs afterward.

He was transported to a Fairbanks hospital and then Providence Medical Center in Anchorage.
