FAA responds to closure of Gulkana Weather Observation Station

As we reported yesterday, the Gulkana Weather Observation Station was suddenly closed by the FAA.

According to documents obtained by the Newscenter, the closure was due to quote, "numerous OSHA violations."

Employees of the station were given one hour to vacate the premises as well as their positions.

When reached for comment, the FAA stated quote, "The FAA suspended operations at the Gulkana Contract Weather Observer facility on August 2nd due to building safety issues. We are evaluating the situation to determine our next steps. An Automated Surface Observing System will continue to provide weather observations for the airport."
