EMS Symposium Focuses on the Heart

FAIRBANKS- Interior medics and emergency responders are meeting this weekend to update their training and study new techniques. Organizers of the EMS symposium are focusing on cardiac arrest this year because they hope to improve survival rates. Today, local survivors of sudden cardiac arrest told their story, while medics walked through their life-saving procedure. Survival rates are usually lower than 10 percent, and CPR must start within 5 minutes to avoid irreversible brain damage. Each responder plays a vital role, or "link," in a chain of survival, including average citizens.

Remember, you can learn this life-saving skill, here locally at the Red Cross.
