The Air Force estimates it could save $227 million by moving a squadron of F-16 fighters from Fairbanks to Anchorage.
The estimate was made public Thursday in the Site Activation Task Force report.
The report says the military could save the money over five years, mainly by eliminating redundant positions at the two bases.
It also estimates the cost to move moving 542 positions from Eielson Air Force Base to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson at nearly $15 million, and details the proposed demolition of housing structures for the jets at Eielson.
Alaska's congressional delegation opposes the move, and have sought more information from the Air Force.
