FAIRBANKS-Next week the Eclipse girls and Phoenix boys will have tryouts for their club soccer teams. Kids ages 9 to 18 can come out to the FYSA soccer fields on Davis Road on Tuesday August 27 and Wednesday 28 from 5:30 to 9 to try out for 13 competitive club soccer teams. You can pre-register online at ww.eclipsesoccer.net
Eclipse and Phoenix club soccer have been successful with teams winning tournaments in state and in the lower 48. Recently, the Phoenix 99 U15 boys won the State Cup in Anchorage last week and three Eclipse teams had second place finishes.
Interim Club Coaching Coordinator Howard Maxwell says club soccer is all about player development.
"Our main goal is to develop players, try to develop players and ultimately try to place them in college programs or high level high school programs depending on what their interests are," Maxwell said.
Maxwell also said it doesn't stop there. Former players come back to help out the next group of kids.
"One of the cool things now is we're starting to see players come back into our coaching ranks, who were original club players and have gone out our way to college and now they're coming back and giving back to the club as assistant coaches and eventually as head coaches in the program," Maxwell said.
