FAIRBANKS- Earlier this month, we reported that Alaska will become one of six testing locations for the Federal Aviation Administration's drone research network. The University of Alaska Fairbanks will manage the pan-pacific test range complex, which has been testing unmanned aircraft systems or drones for about 13 years. The goal is to certify the quality of new drones in the market.
The Director of the test range, Ro Bailey, says Alaska could see substantial benefits as businesses bring their drones to these test sites. “Hopefully we'll see small service companies and big companies set up in the Fairbanks area so we'll see a boost in the technology area that we've not really seen in the state before,” Bailey says. The Pan–Pacific Test Range will be fully operational in less than 6 months.
