Death in Anchorage not from flu as first thought.

Tests conducted at an Alaska state lab show that a patient who died this week at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage did not have the flu although an earlier hospital test indicated type A influenza.

State Department of Health and Social Services spokesman Greg Wilkinson said late today (Thursday)  the confirmatory test on the young adult "came back as negative for influenza." Wilkinson said the tests conducted at the Alaska State Virology Lab in Fairbanks would be considered more definitive than the hospital test.

The cause of death was not determined.

Wilkinson says patients with the flu have been admitted to the Native Medical Center in the past week and some are seriously ill.
