Craig comments on being new West Valley head coach

FAIRBANKS-The West Valley Wolfpack named Jesse Craig as their new girls basketball coach last week. Yesterday Craig got the tour of her new digs with West Valley Athletic Director Missy Poeschel.

Craig is a hoops student of Lathrop legends Joe Tremarello and Milo Griffin having been an assistant for the boys basketball team for the past three seasons. Craig played for the Nanooks from 2007 to 2011 as a forward. She had some knee injuries that sidelined her but that led her to coaching.

Steve Caciari resigned in July but Craig played for Caciari on travel team while in high school. I caught up with Craig who touched on what she wants to do at West Valley.

"I really want to just help improve them as individuals, as players but then take that and then come together and improve them as team. I think it's really important to bring them together as team early on so that you know, if there are rough times they'll pull together as a team and we'll come through it stronger," Craig said.

Craig also talked about bettering players games so they can possibly play after high school

"Improve their fundamentals as players individually and prepare them to go on to the next level. I'ts not just about this season or right here in high school it's to prepare them to go on to college if they want to."

"It's a good staff and players seem good and Kimani [the boys basketball coach] is doing well with the boys so I'm really excited," Craig concluded.
