FAIRBANKS- The untimely death of actor Philip Seymore Hoffman placed heroin abuse in the media spotlight. The drug seems to be making an impact here in the interior as well. Within the past two years, local support groups have witnessed rising heroin abuse among young adults. A counselor from Turning Point Counseling Services, Gunnar Ebbesson, says the value of pharmaceuticals is skyrocketing and the heroin is becoming much cheaper. He says, each week three or four people approach him looking for help to manage their heroin addictions. He advocates for the state to create drug courts, similar to D.U.I. courts, to provide rehabilitation possibilities for convicted drug offenders, rather than prison.
