Concealed Carry on University Campus

FAIRBANKS- Senate Majority Leader John Coghill is sponsoring legislation that would allow people to carry concealed firearms and knives on University campuses. Senator Coghill says SB176 challenges the Board of Regents' authority to set rules restricting legal carry. Currently, the University of Alaska allows weapons on the property, as long as they are left in cars or special lockers.  The bill says the UA board of regents cannot enforce policies regulating things like possession or use, because it’s under the state’s authority. The Board of Regents wants to maintain their current policy, which it believes is safest for the campus community which has a large k-12 population.
