FAIRBANKS- The Cold Climate Housing Research Center will test an emerging heating strategy, and they're using a giant donation. Yesterday, the Center received a 25,000 gallon water tank, courtesy of Bernie Karl, which will be used to store heated water during the winter. The west side of the building will be heated primarily by solar panels, but excess heat will feed into the water tank. Water could heat up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. That Additional heat can be transferred to the building as solar energy diminishes during the winter. Project Engineers already have a plan to share real-time data with the public on their website.
