The 9-year old boy has been identified as Shjon Brown.
Saturday afternoon while riding with his father at Arctic Man, Brown rode a snow machine around a hill of snow and fell through a hole in the glacier known as a moulin.
The recovery mission to locate the boy's body was pending the approval from the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon and the approval had been received a few hours later. The Black-Rapids based NWTC began attempts at recovery into the deep moulin.
According to Ltc. Coppernol, "As of 5:30pm, a team of 14 along with small unit support vehicles, snow machines, and recovery gear (from the Northern Warfare Training Center) linked up with Alaska State Troopers."
According to State Troopers Spokeswoman Megan Peters, at around 12:40AM AKST the recovery mission was completed and Brown's body was located.
Recovery workers with NWTC and the Alaska State Troopers reported the body was buried in 6 to 8 feet of snow underneath the snow machine in the glacial moulin.
The body will be transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Anchorage for autopsy, and according to officials all workers and recovery personnel are accounted for and safely returned from the mission.
